Dark Fruits for Bright HealthAlmost every day, consumers are hearing the praises of dark fruits, such as blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, pomegranates and açaí berries, which have been shown to pack an antioxidant punch. Antioxidants are important because they slow the production of free radicals. Free radicals are particles that can start a chain reaction, like dominoes, which can lead to diseases such as cancer or coronary heart disease. Berries are packed with antioxidants and help you build immunity and stay healthier. Plus, recent studies focusing on food and memory indicate berries rate #1 in helping to prevent memory loss. They contain flavonoids, which help protect the brain’s memory-carrying cells (neurons) from the negative effects of oxidation and inflammation. In addition, preliminary research at the University of Western Ontario cites increased consumption of cranberries as a factor in inhibiting the development of breast cancer cells in animals. Although preliminary, this exciting research shows that cranberries have many disease-fighting properties. With the continued good news about the benefits of dark fruits in the diet, make sure you are adding them to your daily menu. Also remember, the USDA increased daily food requirements to include nine servings of fruits and vegetables, and it can sometimes be challenging to get your daily allowance. Consider choosing an all-natural healthy, 100% juice as a fruit option. You can even pop some berries in your fruit juice and add some yogurt to make a deliciously healthy fruit smoothie.
